The Diplomat Season 4 arrives on Netflix on Thursday 15 October 2026, with all eight episodes released at once. Keri Russell is back as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as her husband, now Vice President Hal Wyler, and Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford as President Grace Penn and first husband Todd Penn, both promoted to series regulars. Netflix's logline puts the US on the brink of war. This guide covers the release date, cast, plot setup, trailer and what to rewatch first.
The Diplomat Season 4 release date and episode count
Netflix's Tudum confirmed the 15 October date, and Variety reported that the fourth season is eight episodes long, the same length as Season 3. Netflix normally releases its global series as a full-season drop, so expect to be able to binge the whole thing on launch day. For Indian viewers, Netflix's English-language originals usually go live around midday IST, but check the title page in the app for the exact time.
What happens in The Diplomat Season 4?
Netflix's official logline: "Two marriages threaten to eat each other alive." One catastrophic moment breaks the fragile peace Kate brokered between the US and UK and puts more strain on her already crumbling marriage. Meanwhile, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler are plotting to steal Russia's most powerful weapon, a scheme that could drag the United States into war. Kate and Todd Penn, "at best an uneasy pair", team up to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn told Tudum she was "so excited about Season 4", and said fans "should be worried. There's plenty to worry about."
The Diplomat Season 4 cast
Back for Season 4 are Keri Russell (Kate Wyler), Rufus Sewell (Hal Wyler), Allison Janney (President Grace Penn), Bradley Whitford (Todd Penn), Nana Mensah (White House chief of staff Billie Appiah, also promoted to series regular), Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and David Gyasi. Russell is also an executive producer, alongside Cahn, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.
The show reached Season 4 on a strong awards run. Russell was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the September 2026 Emmys, where she walked the carpet with husband Matthew Rhys. Janney, Sewell and Whitford also picked up acting nominations, according to Variety.
Is there a trailer for The Diplomat Season 4?
Yes. Netflix released the full-length trailer on 15 September 2026. It picks up the fallout from the Penn administration's covert moves against both the Russian and British governments, with Kate pushed back into the political hot seat. You can find it on Tudum and on Netflix's YouTube channel.
How Season 3 ended (spoiler-light recap)
Season 3 followed Kate as she lived "the particular nightmare that is getting what you want". The old president, played by Michael McKean, died, Grace Penn took office, and Hal ended up in the vice presidency. That left Kate in a role she never wanted, with new freedom and a long list of new enemies. Season 4 starts from that fallout, so a quick rewatch of the Season 3 finale is the best prep.
