What Kazan’s adaptation is about
Steinbeck called East of Eden “the story of my country and the story of me.” Kazan told Tudum she took that as her credo: the series must be “epic and intimate,” as personal for her as the novel was for him — even though he was writing about his own family. Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 James Dean film; she stresses her series is not a remake of that truncated movie but a fuller pass at the book’s multi-generational Salinas Valley saga.
Pugh’s Cathy remains the scheming centre. Kazan says she “didn’t have a backup” — Pugh was “the exact right person.” On set, Kazan called Pugh’s camera awareness “unparalleled” and, without using the word lightly, “genius.” The series aims to “unfold” Cathy as a person rather than a pure archetype, keeping roots in the novel rather than inventing new psychology wholesale.
The story spans decades bookended by the American Civil War and World War I, weaving Cathy’s path through the Trask and Hamilton families and intersecting with Lee’s caretaking intellect and Faye’s open-hearted vulnerability. Tudum frames the theme as inheritance: what gets handed down, what you carry, and how you reconcile with your shadow self.
